What’s Fashionable?

Fashion is changing every moment. For the woman in the following dialogue, it’s fashionable to wear the weird(怪异的)hat. Read the following dialogue and discuss with your group members: What is fashionable in your life today?

Andy and Jess are at a fashion designer’s party.

A: My God, Jess. What’s that on Betty’s head?

J: Beats me. How weird! I think it’s a new kind of hat.

A: Oh, really? If you ask me, it’s more like a bird’s nest. How stupid it looks!

J: you think so? Hey, wait a minute. You might be right. There’s something moving in the nest... I mean, hat.

A: Gee whiz! It’s a bird.

J: Holy cow! How does she keep it from flying away?

A: Don’t you see! She’s got it fastened to a gold chain around her neck.

J: If the bird were strong enough, it could fly her to the moon, so to speak.

A: That would really be funny.

J: Well, that’s fashion!

Fashion: Follow or Not?

In our daily life, many people spend a lot of money following the latest fashion. Some girls even spend two months’ salary on a fashionable handbag. Work with your group members and discuss: Is it necessary to follow the latest fashion? Why or why not?

Sample One

Yes, I think we need to follow the latest fashion. Everyone loves beauty, and likes to become attractive. The fashionable clothes, shoes, or makeup can make us more charming and more confident. When in fashion, we are more likely to be admired. It is believed that a good appearance may leave people a good impression in social contacts. Moreover, if we follow the latest fashion, we can contribute to the economic development because our consumption can create more chances of employment for the fashion designers or other people who work in the field of fashion.

Sample Two

No, I think we should not follow the latest fashion. Fashion is always changing. If we follow the latest fashion, it would be too expensive. Top designers try to lead people to follow the fashion every year, but only rich people can afford it. I think fashion is only a tiring game and a commercial exploitation of women and men. Moreover, not all the fashionable things are suitable for us. Therefore, we need to form our own style and fashion.

Discussion

Every year, many top fashion designers gather together in the fashion center of Milan, ParisNew York and hold fashion shows. It’s really like a party and many people enjoy the fashion show. However, still some people think that it really is a kind of luxury and waste. Discuss with your partner and exchange your opinions towards fashion shows.

Sample One

First I like fashion show very much because of its beauty, and second I can keep myself informed of the fashion at the time even though I won’t exactly follow it all the time. I am quite at ease when I am watching the fashion show, enjoying the music and the beautiful clothes with the beautiful models.

Discussion

Sample Two

I don’t like fashion show because I don’t care about clothes at all. So I won’t spend my time watching the fashion show. I think it belongs to the pretty girls, and most of clothes on the show are not practical, only for show.
